About ABCR

My photo
The American Bashkir Curly Horse Registry (ABCR) was founded in 1971 and is the oldest Registry of Curly Horses. The goals of the ABCR are to preserve this rare horse breed, to promote the Curly Horse as much as possible in shows and in the media, provide education about the special features of the horses, and to protect the genetic pool of the small breed population worldwide.

A SNIPPET OF THE PAST

Does this picture look familiar to you? Enjoy!

HYPO-ALLERGENIC CURLY HORSES

Curly Horses are hypo-allergenic in many cases. Hypo-allergenic means that, in this case, the horse is less likely to cause a person who is allergic to horses to have an allergic response. That does not mean that the person will not have an "allergy attack", but that often the symptoms are less severe if they are present at all. So if you visit a Curly Horse, and you are allergic to horses, be sure to take you medicine with you!
We do not know exactly why this is so, and studies are on going. We think it may be because the Curly Horse's hair is different than a regular horses, or that the proteins in their skin are different.
One of our members, Dr. Wolfgang Mitlehner, recently published a pilot study on the hypo-allergenic characteristics of the Curly Horses. You can find it here: http://www.abcregistry.org/#/research/4582203889

CURLY CUES IS BACK!

A new format, presidents message, News, FAQs, historical Information and pictures, breeders and Curly horse ads and many more ... We felt that we had quite some issues with EJ reaching each member, had only a limited format at EJ and the personal touch was missing, too!

So starting from June 2015, CC will be back with Curly Cues issue 105! It will be supplied by eMail and on the web. If you want it by snail mail, it will cost a little add-on.

Let the Curly World know your news! For the first issue, every ad will be for free for ABCR members.

UPDATE ON THE ABCR CURLY HORSE STUDY

The master thesis has started! In a co-operation with the Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, Austria, ABCR wants to find out more about the Curly Horse and its genetics.

This is the first time such a large sample of more than 2,700 DNA samples of Curly Horses will be used for a study. We are doing that in co-operation with the Texas A&M University and t...he All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Horse Breeding (VNIIK). Planned reference groups for result evaluation are among others Quarter Horses, Arabians, Lipizzans, Russian local horse breeds like Transbaikals, Bashkirs, Akhal-Teke, and Tuvas, and Missoury Fox Trotters,

Aim is to investigate and discuss the population structure of the extant curly population referring to the genetic variation within the Curly Breed (do we find evidence for population substructure within the Curlys e.g. geographically, curly phenotype, mode of inheritance of the curly phenotype?) and the genetic differentiation of the Curly population from other breeds.

DID YOU KNOW?

ABCR checks the average COI (Coeffiecient of Inbreeding) in the Closed Books (Full and Blood Percentage). We used the reduced formular of Wright for it, based on 5 generations.
We encourage all of our breeders to check the COI before breeding (we offer that as a FREE SERVICE to our members, non-members can buy that service, too), because a COI of below 1 % is recommended to avoid inbreeding depression within especially a small population (DGfZ (1992)).
